SAMMINIATESI HILLS
Tuscany boasts six species of truffles spanning different seasons of the year. Tuscany is a rich region in terms of agriculture. When it comes to truffles it is hard to talk about farming. According to the regional law, the harvesting areas have been identified to offer consumers knowledge of the geographical origin besides safeguarding the woodlands ecosystem. The law (L.R. 50/1995) indicates the whereabouts of four woodland areas. You are now exploring the "Samminiatesi Hills” dedicated to yields of the white truffles, the Tuber Magnatum Pico.
The "Samminiatesi Hills" were originally called by the Georgofili Academy in the eighteenth-century cartography to indicate the wooded area between the provinces of Pisa and Florence which, starts North from the Arno River and descends South to the undulating hillside of Volterra. The Regional Law defines today this area in thirty municipalities having its geographical heart in the Egola river valley, which flows from Gambassi into the Arno, in San Miniato municipality. Here, the culture of the search for truffles began.
